Become a
Sandtray Therapist

There are six steps to becoming an Accredited Sandtray Therapist in Australia.  Registering with the STTAA and engaging in ongoing professional development will further support your career in this specialised therapeutic field.

1. Obtain Relevant Qualifications

Educational Background: Ensure you have qualifications in a related field such as counselling, psychology, social work, education, mental health, nursing, disabilities, community services or another relevant discipline. This typically involves holding a degree in one of these areas.

2. Complete Accredited Sandtray Therapy Training

Acredited training: Enrol in an accredited sandtray therapy course such as that provided by Opengate Institute (RTO 45703). This institute offers specialised training that meets national standards for sandtray therapy.

Course Details: Make sure the program includes comprehensive training in both the theory and practical application of sandtray therapy. There must be in-person practical training with a minimum of 35 hours. Verify the course content, duration, and any requirements for client contact hours.

Coursework and Practical Experience: Actively participate in the in-person coursework and complete required practical placements and/or supervised practice. This hands-on experience is crucial for developing your sandtray therapy skills.

Certification: Upon successful completion of the accredited training program, you will receive a certification in sandtray therapy.

3. Register with the Sandtray Therapy Association of Australia (STTAA)

STTAA Membership: Current students or certified practitioners can register with the Sandtray Therapy Association of Australia (STTAA). Membership with STTAA can provide additional professional recognition and resources, as well as opportunities for networking and continuing education.

4. Engage in Supervision and Continuing Professional Development

Supervision: Obtain regular supervision from a qualified sandtray therapist. Supervision helps refine your practice, address any challenges, and ensure adherence to ethical standards.

Professional Development: Participate in ongoing professional development to stay informed about advancements in sandtray therapy. Attend relevant workshops, conferences, and seminars.

Service Integration: Begin offering sandtray therapy as part of your therapeutic services. Clearly communicate the benefits of this approach to your clients and how it can complement other therapeutic techniques you provide.

Marketing and Networking: Promote your sandtray therapy services and network with other professionals in the field. Joining STTAA and participating in its activities can enhance your professional connections and visibility.

The World Technique

Margaret Lowenfeld developed the World Technique, often referred to as ‘sand play’, in the late 1920’s.

She wanted to find a way to engage with the inner life of children and to understand the ideas, feelings and emotions that they were often unable to communicate in words.

Right: ‘Margaret Lowenfeld working with a child at the Institute of Child Psychology using the World Technique.’
