Become a STTAA member

Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the STTAA.  There are three steps to completing the process of application:

Review the options below and decide which membership level is most suitable for your experience.​

Click the "Apply" button on selected membership level. The online application form will collect personal information and proof of certifications required for membership.  The STTAA board will review your application. You will be notifed of the outcome by email.

3. Pay the annual membership fee

​You will be invited to pay the membership fee to finalise your application.  After your application has been verified by the STTAA you will receive your registration certificate and accompanying documentation.  If your application is unsuccessful we will refund your application fee.

Student Member

Student Member

Free for all students completing a recognised qualification or certified course. As a student member, if you are enrolled into a recognised training provider you may be eligible for student insurance for your placement (client contacts). This membership does not allow you a 'Find a Therapist' allocation.

C-STTAA
Certified Sandtray Therapist

Completed 400-600 hours of sand therapy specific education, (incl min. 35 hours of face to face classroom) minimum 60 hours of client contact experience - Log Book and minimum 10 hours of sand therapy specific supervision - Log book signed by Supervisor.


Annual Membership Fee:

$125

Professional Certified Sandtray Therapist
P-STTAA
Professional Certified Sandtray Therapist

Completed Clinical level education 650 - 1200 hours of Sandtray therapy specific education (incl. min. 35 hours of face to face classroom) 120 client contact hours - Log Book and 50 hours of sandtray specific supervision - Log Book signed by Sandtray/Sandplay Supervisor.


Annual Membership Fee:

$150

Master Sandtray Therapist
MA-STTAA
Master Sandtray Therapist

Completed a Sandtray Therapy Qualification or equivalent, completed more than 1200 hours of sand therapy specific education and 1,500 hours of client contact experience. May deliver supervision and training.

$175

Requirements for Affiliate Members

 An Affiliate Member in Sandtray Therapy is an educator contributing to the field through:

  • Research,

  • Conducting training, or

  • Providing sand tray play in school settings.

Additionally, you must:

  • Demonstrate an interest in Sand Therapy that benefits the association.

  • Provide a strong rationale for how your involvement supports the association (e.g., expertise in managing not-for-profit organisations).

  • Be exempt from providing documentation (see Clause A, if applicable).

Affiliate members may:

  • Deliver Sand Therapy-specific Professional Development.

  • Advertise via our Facebook page, provided the content aligns with our set guidelines and is recognised as relevant by the membership.

Clause A: Documentation Exemption Affiliate Members may be exempt from providing standard documentation if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Extensive Professional Experience – If a person has significant hands-on expertise in Sandtray Therapy but lacks formal qualifications, their experience can serve as an alternative credential. Their experience can serve as an alternative credential. RPL is available in the resource section

  2. Recognised Contributions – Members who actively engage in research, training, or advocacy within the field may be eligible, as their work directly supports and advances Sandtray Therapy.

  3. Unique Expertise Benefiting the Association – Individuals with specialised knowledge (e.g., how to manage a not-for-profit organization) could qualify if their skills provide tangible benefits to the association.

  4. Equivalent Credentials or Related Experience – If an applicant holds credentials in a related discipline or demonstrates relevant experience, the membership committee may accept those qualifications in place of standard documentation.

  5. Case-by-Case Assessment – Those with an interest in Sandtray therapy coming from a lived experience!  Each exemption request will be evaluated individually to ensure it aligns with the association’s mission and goals
